 Checklist For a Successful

RRP Remodeling Project

Initial Steps

  • Get Certified & Trained

    • EPA Firm Certification (application and $300)

    • At least 1 certified lead renovator (8 hour class)

    • Train your workers (non-certified workers)

  • Assemble equipment, materials  paperwork including Renovate Right

  • Give pamphlet to potential client during site visit

  • Decide if you will test or assume paint to contain lead

    • Homes built prior to 1960 – may be best to assume lead presence

    • Homes built between 1960 and 1978 – may consider testing

       

  • Submit bid(s)
    • Bid to include lead safe work practices

    • Bid without lead safe work practices (will require testing)

After Contract is Signed

  • Paint testing (unless assuming lead) – test all components that will be disturbed

    • EPA recognized test kit; or

    • XRF or Paint Chip (only by inspector or risk assessor); or

    • If all surfaces are free of lead – no further lead safe work practices required

    • If any surfaces are lead containing – follow all lead procedures

  • Redistribute Renovate Right pamphlet (e-mailing is acceptable)

  • Get acknowledgement form for Renovate Right pamphlet signed

  • Assign Certified Renovator to job

  • Have Certified Renovator train workers, if necessary

  • Identify and prepare work area(s) to provide containment

  • Complete the renovation portion of the work (demolition, paint disturbance and/or component removal) according to RRP standards

  • Thoroughly clean entire work area (this step can be done after demolition and before new construction phases)

    • Use HEPA vacuum (not vacuum with HEPA filter)

    • Use HEPA vacuum with a beater bar for carpeting

    • Wet wipe all surfaces except carpeting

    • Repeat HEPA vacuuming of all surfaces

  • Perform cleaning verification procedure

    • Reclean if needed until cleaning verification steps are completed

  • Document all work and keep electronic copies

  • Once verification is achieved the area is no longer considered a lead work area and can be occupied by building occupants and non-certified contractors.

    • No more signs

    • No more PPE (unless required for something else)

    • No more containment (unless you’d do it anyway for dust)

    • No more documentation

     

Notice: This checklist is provided only as a tool to help contractors meet the major requirements of the EPA’s Lead RRP Rule. There are other regulations that must be followed to meet all of the requirements of the RRP rule. Any contractor using this checklist does so voluntarily, and waives any claims against Lead Safe America and Indoor Environment Group, Inc.
